MEET THE STAFF

Kathleen Sowards
Anabell Barrientos

Kathleen was born in Washington, DC. Kathleen was the oldest of her two biological brothers and at the age of 10 her family opened their hearts and home to many foster children. At one time they had 11 foster children living with them. One of them was a young girl that Kathleen now considers her sister.

Education has always been important to Kathleen and she continues to work hard on completing her degree after putting her education on hold to raise her three children. Her oldest, Jason, is in the United States Air Force. Jason is a and certified Fire Fighter and is working on his B.A. in Fire Science. Stephen, her second son, married his high school sweetheart in December. While his wife works as a nurse, Stephen is finishing his Theology degree and is looking forward to being a Youth Pastor. Esther, the youngest, also married in December just weeks before her brother and is now living in another state with her husband who is in the Navy.

Kathleen and her husband, Bob, are finding life without "children" at home a new experience. Bob has been employed at Home Study International for over 30 years and is director of their computer department. Some of their favorite times have been spent enjoying canoeing, kayaking, hiking, camping and training their dogs.

Kathleen enjoys sewing, crafts, reading, traveling to visit her children and friends, and spending time with her Doberman Pincher, Jordan. Kathleen is training Jordan for confirmation showing. Jordan has already received several second and third place ribbons. They are working hard for Jordan to earn his Championship title.

Anabell was born in Oroville, California. When she was still a baby, her parents moved to Montemorelos University in Mexico where her father finished his studies in theology. At the age of eight, her family moved to El Salvador in Central America. Later, she attended the SDA University in Alajuela, Costa Rica for 4 years and received her Bachelor's degree in Education (Teaching).

Her family moved back to the United States in 2001 where her father is currently the pastor at the Langley Park (Maryland) Spanish SDA Church. God gave her the opportunity to work as a Spanish teacher at Sligo Adventist School before starting her work in the Department of Family Ministries.

Anabell has a brother, Jose, who is five years younger then she. He is a present to Anabell, because he was born on her birthday, February 15. He is currently studying theology at Columbia Union College. Anabell’s mother also works at the General Conference in Adventist Risk Management. Anabell is very thankful to our Lord to have come back to her native country and to have the opportunity to work in this wonderful department.

Anabell enjoys playing soccer, listening to music and meeting new friends. She would like to learn French and Italian and pursue her Master’s degree in Education.
